What is a Therapy Dog?

Therapy dogs accompany their owners to volunteer in places like schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. They work with their handlers to improve others’ lives, whether helping a child learn to read or visiting a senior in assisted living. It’s important to note that therapy dogs are different from service dogs. Service dogs are specifically trained to perform tasks that assist people with disabilities, such as guiding a blind person or helping someone with a physical disability. They have public access rights, including in planes and restaurants. In contrast, therapy dogs, who earn the AKC Therapy Dog™ title, do not have these privileges.

* It is considered unethical to pretend a therapy dog is a service dog for purposes like flying or dining out.
